Message from the President

Bunny Shaw

Once again we thank Ivo Nightingale for organizing the successful car rally held October 18. Jack Vallings created the route. Lynda Nightingale helped devising the observation questions and checking mileages etc. Fred and Jean Collins assisted at the start and finish, checking off the answer sheets. All in all it was well attended and certainly well enjoyed. We all certainly enjoyed our lunch at the new golf club Baxter Creek.

Our executive met on October 19, with our plans toward our Christmas Dinner December 3, and looking toward our outings in the new year.

I am sure everyone enjoyed our speaker this month, Dr. Peter Frise, on the topic, "The Future of the Automobile." It was most interesting and we thank him.

CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON DECEMBER 3

Lyn Chaplin reminds you that the Christmas Lunch and silent auction are scheduled for December 3. Tickets are $15.00 for members and $20.00 for non-members. Please call Lynn for tickets after November 5 and if there are any tickets still available you may make arrangements to pay prior to December 3.

REGARDING TRIPS AND SPECIAL EVENTS

From time to time companies such as Cardinal Tours, Denure Tours, Marlin Travel, etc., will advertise trips to various venues which would be of interest to Probus Members. These trips are usually more affordable than if our club went on its own. As I become aware of any such trips I will let the membership know. It may be necessary for those interested to make arrangements themselves<./p>

P.S. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

I ONLY HAVE A MINUTE

I only have a minute
Only 60 seconds in it,
Forced upon me, can't refuse it,
Didn't seek it, didn't choose it,
But it's up to me to use it,
I must suffer it I lose it,
Give account if I abuse it,
Just a tiny little minute -
But eternity is in it.

GENTLE REMINDERS

1) Please ensure your names are checked off at the front desk when you arrive for the meeting. This list has a number of uses. It provides the count of members and guests used to calculate payment to the Naval Club for refreshments. The list is used to mail out the newsletter to members not at the meeting. In this way they can stay abreast of what is happening and not miss out on any activity. (Thank you Dorothy Bell for undertaking this job that entails addressing by hand and then stuffing envelopes. Therefore the fewer the families not checked off the attendance list, the easier the job will be.) After Dorothy has mailed out the newsletters, she forwards the list to Ivo Nightingale who updates the attendance database that goes back to 2005.

2) Wear your Probus nametag to the meetings or other Probus events as a courtesy to those of us who know you well but your name slips our memory. We all have "senior moments" or memory lapses. If you have misplaced your nametag and wish to order a replacement (cost approximately $8.00) see Ivo Nightingale.

3) Lug a Mug - remember to do your part for the environment and bring your own coffee mug to the meetings. Some members keep a mug in the car so they have no further than the car park to walk when they forget it.

MEMBERSHIP

The Club welcomes two new members, Dorene James and Ada Meecham. Both have been active in our community for a number of years and we are pleased they have decided to join Probus. Dorene has a nursing background and currently enjoys her grandchildren's sports when she is not travelling. She has travelled extensively in Canada, the United States, and Malyasia. Ada retired a number of years ago following 15 years as Trent University's Director of Counselling. She has many interests including art, golf, music, and public speaking. We look forward to knowing them both better as they participate in the Club's activities. The Club Membership now stands at 111 members.

SMILES

First you tell your friends that you are having an affair. Then your friend asks you, "Are you having it catered?" THAT, my friend, is the definition of "old!".
